Passive RAIN RFID tag system saved this firm hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours of work
While there are limits to any hardware tools used in cataloging and tracking assets, the limitations of modern passive RAIN RFID technology for this purpose are overblown. RFID asset management for data centers and corporate IT departments:

A major international professional services and management consulting company was struggling with what, on its face, might seem like a simple IT asset management challenge: tracking laptops and other consumer IT assets owed by the company. Fixed-position tag readers installed in each company building automatically scanned the tags whenever the assets were removed from their home location in one room, moved to a different floor or department, or removed from the building entirely. With dates and times logged automatically, it was simple for IT managers to check records and find the last known location or any asset in the system.
